Here sensational gorges are carved into the Top End sandstone, the flood lines stained into the rock at (what seems like) unbelievable heights in the dry season. During the wild and wet season, rains rise the water by up to 18 meters, leaving most of the park area flooded and completely inaccessible.
Starting at the Nitmiluk visitor centre and campground, is the 62km long Jatbula Trail. This is a fantastic 4+ day hike through special country, with each campsite situated on a refreshing creek, river, billabong or waterfall.
The Nitmiluk National Park – where these photos were taken – is on the traditional country of the Jawoyn tribe. I respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of these lands and waters on which I was able to traverse, learn, and appreciate – and pay respect to the First Nations Peoples and their elders, past, present and future.
