Sweeping views of most of the state, gazing out over vast tracts of wild lands, gnarly dolerite and quarts mountain peaks, elevated glacial lakes, and imagining the scenes below the dense temperate rainforest canopy.
From atop Frenchmans Cap, you can admire the awesome size of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, including the Wild Rivers, the Southwest, the Walls of Jerusalem, and the Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Parks. With such a vantage point, you can also reflect on the respectable foresight of those that fought hard to have these special places protected.
The Frenchmans Cap Trail is of high class, receiving an upgrade in recent years that has massively reduced the interactions hikers have with mud. The huts are fantastic, especially Lake Tahune hut that sits at 900 meters in elevation and has spectaluar views to the north of the ranges, particularly those in Cradle Mountain – lake St Clair NP. Weather, always a variable, has ranged from snow in mid-December to blue skies and temperatures in the high twenties. On this trail, always be prepared for all weather conditions. It’s a wild corner of the world.
The Frenchman’s Cap Trail, and the Wild Rivers National Park – where these photos were taken – is the traditional lands of the Toogee nation. I respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of these lands and waters on which I was able to traverse, learn, and appreciate – and pay respect to the First Nations Peoples and their elders, past, present and future.
