From the Top End to Tassie – and all trails in between – Making Tracks is a platform created by and for hikers passionate about our beautiful backyard.

Making Tracks was born out of a career of rangering in nature, campaigning for the protection of our most special places, and of course, the endless hours spent on the trails around the country.

With camera in hand, journal at the ready, and a pack primed for plenty of time out bush, Making Tracks is primed for sharing an appreciation for our special backyard in these three ways.

Active Protection

Australia’s unique landscapes and huge biodiversity should be forever incredible. Yet these special places are under the pump, and for every step of inspiration we receive we need to dedicate one to active protection.

Nature/Wilderness/National Parks – land and water – it’s proven our unique backyard needs some space and sanctuary in order to thrive. Yes, they are places of wonder, of inspiration, and where most of our hiking is completed. Think the Prom, the Southwest, and the Overland. But of most importance is the role of we can play in ensuring that what we’re enjoying today will be here for those that follow in our footsteps tomorrow.

Long Distance Hiking

It’s our never ending journey. As one trail ends we’re already thinking of the next. It’s the lengthy days. The maps. The sun and the dust. Our gear and food condensed masterfully into a tight backpack. Where our inspiration often begins, overnight on the trail immersed in our big backyard.

Long-distance hiking in Australia comes in all forms – from well established trails to gnarly water-sparse traverses. Each of our experience on trail is unique. Understanding our skills, our gear, and how our expectations are formed helps refine and define our time on trail. Making Tracks shares experiences for the benefit of enriching our hiking culture.
